Yokohama is the easiest day trip from Tokyo. It's so close (25-40 minutes by train) that it barely feels like leaving the city — but the vibe is completely different. Japan's largest Chinatown, a gorgeous waterfront, two world-class food museums, and a budget that won't hurt.

01Getting there

Yokohama is connected to Tokyo by multiple train lines, all covered by your IC card (Suica or Pasmo). No special tickets needed.

JR Lines

From Tokyo Station: JR Tokaido Line or JR Yokosuka Line to Yokohama Station, about 25-30 minutes, ¥480. From Shibuya: JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line, about 30 minutes, ¥400. From Shinjuku: JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line, about 35-40 minutes, ¥580. All are regular trains — no reserved seats, no extra charges.

Tokyu Toyoko Line (recommended)

From Shibuya: Tokyu Toyoko Line runs direct to Motomachi-Chukagai Station (end of the Minatomirai Line), about 35 minutes, ¥480. This drops you right at Chinatown and the waterfront — no transfers needed. Best option if Chinatown is your first stop.

Minatomirai Line

The Minatomirai Line connects Yokohama Station to the waterfront area, with stops at Minatomirai, Bashamichi, and Motomachi-Chukagai. If you arrive at JR Yokohama Station, take this line to reach the sightseeing area (3-7 minutes, ¥200-250).

BEST ROUTE

Tokyu Toyoko Line from Shibuya direct to Motomachi-Chukagai. One train, no transfers, drops you at Chinatown. IC card works — just tap and go.

02Yokohama Chinatown

Yokohama Chinatown (横浜中華街) is the largest Chinatown in Japan and one of the largest in the world. Over 500 restaurants and shops packed into a few colorful blocks. The vibe is walk-and-eat — grab something from a street stall, eat while walking, then grab the next thing.

Must-try food

Xiaolongbao (小籠包) — soup dumplings, available everywhere from ¥400-600 for a set. Nikuman (肉まん) — giant steamed meat buns, the ultimate street food here, ¥300-500 each. Mango pudding — a Chinatown specialty dessert, creamy and rich, ¥300-400.

Where to walk

Start on Chukagai-odori (中華街大通り), the main street running through the center. It's the most vibrant and photogenic. Side alleys have smaller, often better-value shops. The ornate gates (paifang) at each entrance make great photo spots.

Budget

A solid food crawl costs ¥1,500-3,000 per person. You can eat cheaply with street food (nikuman + xiaolongbao = ¥800) or sit down for a full meal (¥1,500-2,500). Most places have picture menus or English signs.

VERDICT

The food crawl is the highlight of the entire Yokohama trip. Come hungry. Start with xiaolongbao, end with mango pudding, and grab nikuman in between.

03Minato Mirai waterfront

Minato Mirai (みなとみらい) is Yokohama's modern waterfront district — skyscrapers, a giant ferris wheel, shopping, and a beautiful harbor walk. It's about a 15-minute walk from Chinatown, so you can combine both in one route.

Landmark Tower Sky Garden

The 69th floor observation deck offers panoramic views of Yokohama, Tokyo Bay, and (on clear days) Mt. Fuji. Entry ¥1,000. Worth it for the view, especially around sunset.

Cosmo Clock 21

The giant ferris wheel on the waterfront. ¥900 per ride, about 15 minutes. Iconic Yokohama photo opportunity, and the views from the top are impressive — particularly at night when the whole area is lit up.

Red Brick Warehouse (赤レンガ倉庫)

Two beautifully restored warehouse buildings with shops, cafes, and seasonal events. Free to enter and walk around. Great for picking up souvenirs or just enjoying the harbor atmosphere.

Yamashita Park (山下公園)

A long waterfront park stretching along the harbor. Free. Perfect for a stroll after eating too much in Chinatown. The retired ship Hikawa Maru is docked here for tours (¥300).

VERDICT

Beautiful at sunset. Walk from Chinatown through Yamashita Park to Minato Mirai, arriving at the waterfront as the sky turns orange. The evening views are free and unforgettable.

04Museums & attractions

Cup Noodles Museum (カップヌードルミュージアム)

Entry ¥500 (free for children under 4). The highlight is making your own custom Cup Noodles — you choose the soup, toppings, and decorate the cup. This costs an additional ¥500 and is genuinely fun regardless of age. Located in Minato Mirai, walking distance from the waterfront.

Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum (新横浜ラーメン博物館)

Entry ¥380. Inside, the basement recreates a 1958 Tokyo streetscape — neon signs, old shop facades, atmospheric lighting. Nine ramen shops serve regional styles from across Japan. Each bowl costs ¥900-1,100. Order mini portions (ミニ) to try multiple shops.

Important: This museum is in Shin-Yokohama, a different station from central Yokohama. Take the JR Yokohama Line from Yokohama Station (about 12 minutes). Plan this as a separate stop, not part of the Chinatown/Minato Mirai walking route.

Gundam Factory Yokohama

If you're into anime or mecha, the life-size moving Gundam statue in Yamashita Pier is worth a visit. Check ahead for current operating status and hours.

VERDICT

Cup Noodles Museum is the crowd favorite — interactive, fun, and you leave with a souvenir you made yourself. Ramen Museum is a must for ramen lovers but requires a detour to Shin-Yokohama.

05Costs breakdown

Item Cost Notes
Train round trip ¥960-1,160 Depends on starting station
Chinatown food crawl ¥1,500-3,000 Street food to sit-down meal
Cup Noodles Museum ¥1,000 ¥500 entry + ¥500 make your own
Ramen Museum ¥1,280-1,480 ¥380 entry + ¥900-1,100 per bowl
Landmark Tower ¥1,000 Sky Garden observation deck
Cosmo Clock 21 ¥900 Ferris wheel ride
Total (typical day) ¥4,000-7,000 ~$27-47 USD

Yokohama is one of the cheapest day trips from Tokyo. You can do Chinatown + waterfront walk for under ¥3,000 total including transport. Add a museum or two and you're still under ¥7,000.

BUDGET TIP

Skip the paid attractions and just do Chinatown food crawl + Minato Mirai waterfront walk. Total cost: about ¥2,500-4,000 including train. Best budget day trip from Tokyo.

06Tips

Combine Chinatown + Minato Mirai in one walk. They're about 15 minutes apart on foot via Yamashita Park. Start at Chinatown for lunch, then walk to the waterfront for the afternoon.

Cup Noodles Museum needs reservation on weekends. Book online in advance at cupnoodles-museum.jp. Weekdays are usually fine without a reservation, but weekends and holidays sell out.

Ramen Museum is in Shin-Yokohama. This is a separate station from central Yokohama — about 12 minutes by JR Yokohama Line. Don't try to walk there from Chinatown. Plan it as a first or last stop.

Great for rainy days. Most of the attractions are indoors — Chinatown (covered streets), Cup Noodles Museum, Ramen Museum, Red Brick Warehouse, Landmark Tower. Yokohama is the best Tokyo day trip when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Evening waterfront views are free and beautiful. If you can stay until sunset, walk along the Minato Mirai waterfront. The Cosmo Clock 21 and Landmark Tower lit up against the harbor is one of the best night views near Tokyo.

IDEAL ROUTE

Shibuya → Tokyu Toyoko Line → Motomachi-Chukagai → Chinatown lunch → Yamashita Park walk → Cup Noodles Museum → Red Brick Warehouse → Minato Mirai sunset → train home. Total: 5-6 hours, ¥4,000-5,000.
