Nikko is one of the most rewarding day trips from Tokyo — a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with Japan's most lavishly decorated shrines, ancient cedar forests, and dramatic waterfalls. It's further than Kamakura or Yokohama, but the payoff is huge.
01Getting there
Tobu Nikko Line (recommended)
The most popular and affordable option. Trains depart from Tobu Asakusa Station (not the metro station — look for the Tobu ticket gates). The limited express (Revaty) takes about 2 hours and costs ¥2,800 one way. There are also cheaper local/rapid trains that take 2.5-3 hours.
Tobu All Nikko Pass
The best deal for most visitors: ¥4,780 from Asakusa. This covers the round-trip train fare plus unlimited bus rides in the Nikko area (essential if you want to visit Kegon Falls or Lake Chuzenji). Valid for 2 days, but works perfectly for a day trip. Buy it at the Tobu Asakusa station counter.
JR option
You can also reach Nikko via JR — take the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, then transfer to the JR Nikko Line. It's faster (about 1 hour 40 minutes total) but more expensive: ¥5,000+ round trip. Worth considering if you have a JR Pass, otherwise the Tobu route is better value.
02Toshogu Shrine
Toshogu is Japan's most ornate shrine, and it's not even close. Built in 1617 as the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu — the shogun who unified Japan — the complex is an explosion of gold leaf, intricate wood carvings, and vivid color. Where most Japanese shrines favor minimalism, Toshogu goes maximalist in every direction.
The scale is staggering. Over 15,000 artisans worked on the original construction. Every surface is covered with carvings of dragons, birds, flowers, and mythical creatures, all painted in bright reds, greens, blues, and golds. The Yomeimon Gate alone has over 500 individual carvings and is considered one of the finest pieces of architecture in Japan.
Famous carvings
Two carvings are particularly iconic. The "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" three monkeys (sanzaru) are carved on the Sacred Stable — a small building that's easy to miss if you're not looking. The Sleeping Cat (Nemuri-neko), attributed to master carver Hidari Jingoro, sits above a gateway and is remarkably small given its fame.
Practical info
Entry costs ¥1,300. Budget 2-3 hours minimum — there's far more to see than you expect. The complex includes multiple buildings, a pagoda, and a long stone staircase up to Ieyasu's tomb. Arrive early to avoid the heaviest crowds.
Toshogu alone justifies the trip to Nikko. There is nothing like it anywhere else in Japan — the level of artistic detail is genuinely overwhelming. Don't rush it.
03Beyond Toshogu
Toshogu is the headline, but the surrounding shrine and temple complex has more to offer — all within easy walking distance of each other.
Rinnoji Temple
One of Nikko's oldest temples, home to three massive gilded Buddha statues (each over 8 meters tall). The Sanbutsudo hall is impressive, though less visually intense than Toshogu. Entry ¥400.
Futarasan Shrine
Older and quieter than Toshogu, this shrine dates back to 782 AD. It's dedicated to the spirits of Nikko's three sacred mountains. The atmosphere is more peaceful — tall cedar trees, moss-covered stone, and far fewer tourists. Entry ¥300.
Shinkyo Bridge
The iconic red lacquered bridge at the entrance to the shrine area. You can photograph it from the road for free. Crossing it costs ¥300 — a quick detour but a nice photo opportunity, especially in autumn when the surrounding trees turn gold and red.
04Nature spots
If you finish the shrine complex and still have energy, Nikko's natural scenery is spectacular — but be aware that these spots add 2-3 hours to your trip.
Kegon Falls
One of Japan's top three waterfalls, Kegon drops 97 meters into a misty basin. Take a bus from the shrine area (about 45 minutes, covered by the Tobu All Nikko Pass). There's a free viewing platform at the top, or take an elevator (¥570) down to a closer observation deck at the base — the elevator view is dramatically better and worth the cost.
Lake Chuzenji
A scenic lake at the top of the mountain, right next to Kegon Falls. It's beautiful for a short walk along the shore, especially in autumn. There are lakeside restaurants if you want lunch with a view.
Irohazaka winding road
The bus to Kegon Falls climbs the famous Irohazaka switchback road — 48 hairpin curves named after the 48 characters of the Japanese alphabet. It's an experience in itself, especially during autumn foliage season when the mountainside turns brilliant orange and red.
If you leave Tokyo early enough (by 7:30am), you can fit both the shrines and Kegon Falls into one day. If time is tight, prioritize Toshogu — the nature spots are wonderful but the shrine is the main event.

06Tips & warnings
Leave Tokyo by 7:30am. Nikko is a 2-hour trip, and you want to arrive before the tour buses. The shrine complex opens at 8:00am (9:00am in winter). If you also want to visit Kegon Falls, every minute counts.
The shrine complex is uphill. From the bus stop to Toshogu, you'll walk uphill on stone paths and climb stone stairs. It's not extreme, but it's steady incline. Comfortable shoes are essential — not sandals, not dress shoes.
Autumn (late October to November) is peak season. The foliage is genuinely stunning — especially along Irohazaka and around Lake Chuzenji. But expect larger crowds and consider booking limited express tickets in advance.
Winter is cold but uncrowded. Nikko sits at elevation and gets significantly colder than Tokyo. December through February can see snow. The shrine complex in snow is beautiful, and you'll have it nearly to yourself.
Last train back is around 8pm. Check the exact timetable for your travel date. Missing it means an expensive taxi or an unplanned overnight stay.
Nikko is the best day trip from Tokyo for anyone who loves shrines, history, or nature. It requires an early start and a full day, but Toshogu Shrine is a once-in-a-lifetime sight that no other destination near Tokyo can match.
